As they used to say on the Navy ships......"Make all necessary preparations for getting underway". We are doing so now, with an expected departure of this Friday Jan 4. We have our weather window, which may last 3-4 days. We plan to be cruising for 1-2 years, with periodic stops in ports long enough for us to return to TN every month to care for Sue's mother. There may even be a trip or two to Ohio to help care for Sue's uncle. But in between, we'll finally be cruising.
It's a bit scary thinking about what is ahead. Maybe just the uncertainty of it all. But we've been planning to do this for 7-8 years, and talking about it even longer. Time to stop talking & start doing.
For the last couple months, we've tried hard to get the boat and ourselves ready to travel. We began provisioning a month ago (to spread out the costs of doing so), and making detailed trip plans during the past 2 weeks. But there's always the last minute things that pop up. For us, we're still trying to stop the water leaks into our chain locker by re-bedding & caulking most everything around the anchor windlass on deck. We caulked some fiberglass joints yesterday that apparently had never been caulked since one of the previous owners installed the windlass. When the rains come again this evening, we'll see how well we've fixed things so far. Still need to remove the windlass itself & re-bed it, but we'll have to do that when we stop somewhere for a couple days. The anchor system & ground tackle are usable, which is good, because we plan to anchor 60% of the nites during our first leg.
Still learning this blog thing, but it seems like the way to record our experiences. Friends & neighbors, in-laws & out-laws, can access the information as they wish to see where in the world Sue & Jim are.

Trying this thing out
12/28/2012
Trying out this blog-thing for the first time. Last year, on our trip from Chattanooga to New Orleans, we periodically emailed our friends, and most of them enjoyed reading about our travels. Will try this blog as a means to inform/entertain/bore our friends & relatives as we plan our departure for a year or two of cruising.
